Steve Jobs Says "No," iPad Won't Tether To iPhone   ⇒

A Sweedish DJ of some fame asks,

Will the wifi-only version somehow support tethering thru my iPhone?

To which Steve Jobs replies,

No.

Sent from my iPhone

I had no intention of buying the 3G veresion of the iPad, since I had assumed I could just use my iPhone as a modem. Who really wants to pay for two data plans? I currently pay a bunch of moneys for 6 gigs of data, which is far more than I could ever use. If I was dragging a laptop out with me I could tether it to my iPhone to get on the Internet. Why should the iPad be an exception?

Anyway, all is not lost. MyWi and PDANet both turn your iPhone into a hotspot, which the iPad would see as an available wireless connection. The fact you need to use these jailbreak applications to accomplish something Apple really should support from the get-go is more than a little lame.
