We’re often told that we should design our websites and software to mimic real-life objects. The iPhone strengthened this idiom, and Apple has been driving this home hard for the iPad.

But it’s not absolute, and it’s not always the best idea. My favorite counterexample is the typical calculator…

An interesting discussion on user interface design. Apple certainly has made all the apps they’ve produced on the iPhone into analogs of their real world counterparts, where applicable. I suspect this is because the demographic they hope to win over will respond positively to applications that look like books, calendars, address books, etc.
